Mediterranean Ports

Written by

CruiseThere are Med ports I would gladly visit again and again. A pre- or post-cruise stay is recommended for several - because there is just too much to see and do in a single day.

Athens: The glory that was Greece is still here, evidenced by centuries-old monuments alongside high-rises, neoclassical buildings, tavernas, cafés and shops. A pre-cruise stay is recommended for itineraries that start here.  Major tours include the Acropolis, the museums and the great temples of Zeus. But it’s being part of Athenian life for a while, lingering in the cafes, having a great mezze with some ouzo or local beer in a taverna that makes for a satisfying feeling of having actually “been there,” instead of just passing through.

Vietnam’s Spa/Resorts

Written by

LUX
Saigon, officially Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam’s largest city and pulsating commercial capital, boasts a dynamic blend of new and old. Nowhere is the country’s rich history and vibrant, fast-developing future more apparent than this cosmopolitan metropolis, often the first stop for visitors to Vietnam. Sleek skyscrapers, luxury hotels, designer shops, sidewalk cafes and traffic-jammed streets are juxtaposed with traditional markets, ancient temples and striking reminders of the city’s storied past.

The Advantage of Belonging

Written by

Doug
Along with this issue is our Annual Guide to Host Agencies, Coop’s and Consortia. This guide is a valuable source of information when looking to join one of these types of groups. It can also serve as a starting point for those agents who may currently be affiliated with an organization but are looking to make a change. Our research indicates that up to 35% of agents are considering changing their affiliation.
Why join one of these groups in the first place? For newer agents without a track record in the industry, it provides them with an agency partner through whom they can book travel. More experienced agents may join for one or more of the reasons below.

New York's Boutique Hotels

Written by

USA
Small hotels have always been part of New York’s hospitality mix. But in 1984, the first boutique hotel appeared in the city when Ian Schrager, of Studio 54 discotheque fame, opened Morgans Hotel, still a stylish Midtown fixture.

Ranging from about 100-200 rooms, boutique hotels typically offered three-to-five star luxury, personalized service and upscale furnishings. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, designer-decorated boutique hotels ran the gamut from minimalist with all-white interiors to phantasmagorical with velvet trappings, outsize gilded mirrors and eye-popping art.

Home to some of the Mediterranean’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites, it’s also a mecca for culture and history buffs.
