Australia For Families

Written by  Katie Hultgren

A family adventure to Australia will require lots of planning and may be quite an undertaking, but one that is also very rich in reward for your clients. Advise them to load up the tablet with movies and games, and prepare for a long flight - but also to get ready for lots of adventure once they arrive. For families traveling together, you need to find something for everyone, and you are sure to find that, and so much more in Australia.
Adults know that the natural wonders of this country include rainforests, waterfalls, rugged bush, and marine wonderlands. When traveling with kids, their idea of Australia may be much more simple, and include animals such as koalas and kangaroos. When touring the country be sure to include these stops, sure to please the whole family.

Sea Life Sydney Aquarium
In the capital city of Sydney, visit the bigger and better Sea Life Sydney Aquarium. Go on a journey of amazing discovery through the aquarium’s unique freshwater and marine aquatic environments and discover an incredible 13,000 animals from 700 different species - including the world’s largest variety of sharks and rays. Fourteen newly-themed zones include a new Shark Walk, a tropical Bay of Rays, an interactive Discovery Rockpool, Mangrove Swamps, a shipwreck and the new ocean tunnel walk-through - Shark Valley. See the bizarre but beautiful dugongs - 2 of only 5 on display anywhere in the world - plus huge sharks, massive stingrays, majestic turtles, jellyfish, platypuses, penguins, sea dragons, thousands of tropical fish, enormous crabs and much, much more.
From the freshwater rivers of the south to the tropical waters of the north, including the world’s biggest and most impressive Great Barrier Reef exhibit, a trip to Sydney Aquarium takes you around Australia’s coastline, out into its oceans and up into its waterways - all without leaving the city!

Phillip Island Nature Parks
Only 90 minutes from Melbourne, experience Victoria’s wildlife island featuring spectacular coastal scenery, charming heritage and an abundance of Australian wildlife. Visit the Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm and the Nobbies Centre. Offering a range of quality ecotourism experiences across four major parks, a diversity of natural environments to explore and a variety of wildlife to encounter, this park is sure the please the entire family. The nature park is part of the UNESCO Western Port Biosphere Reserve and encompasses wildlife sanctuaries, wetlands, woodlands and breathtaking coastlines, which are protected and managed by world-renowned environmental and research programs. The habitat within Phillip Island Nature Parks supports significant populations of little penguins, hooded plovers, short-tailed shearwaters and other international migratory bird species, and mammals such as koalas, possums, wallabies, Australian fur seals and bats.
The Penguin Parade begins at sunset. Prior to that, the Summerland Peninsula has many great beaches and walks to explore. Explore the interactive displays at the Penguin Parade visitor center and discover more about Phillip Island’s little penguins. Take a walk down the Penguin Parade boardwalks through the penguin colony to the beach. Look for the penguin burrows where some penguins will rest during the day or where other penguins will return to at sunset.
The Koala Conservation Centre offers a range of family friendly activities and opportunities to explore the native bush and see Australian wildlife - be sure to wander the two tree top boardwalks for superb up-close koala viewing.
Also on Phillip Island, the Churchill Island Heritage Farm offers a range of daily farming activities and walks around the island close to internationally recognized wetlands. Watch daily farming activities, and view other Aussie demonstrations including boomerang throwing and whip cracking.
At the Nobbies Centre, immerse yourself in the interactive displays, or explore the spectacular coastal scenery from the cliff top boardwalks. View one of Australia’s largest fur seal colonies and discover fascinating local marine life through the interactive displays.

Pine Koala Sanctuary
North of the gold coast in Brisbane, kids (and adults!) can cuddle a koala at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This 11-acre animal sanctuary has been open since 1927, and is home to a wide range of Aussie wildlife. Visitors can hand-feed kangaroos and wallabies on the reserve, see birds, reptiles, raptors and view and participate in daily shows and activities.
Feed the beautiful rainbow lorikeet birds, known for their distinctive loud screech and green, blue, yellow and red feathers. Check out Lone Pine’s Aussie sheep dog show, held 3 times a day, inside the Nature Kingdom. See the amazing skills of the hardworking sheep dogs as they command the sheep around the paddock for their master, responding to finely tuned whistles, calls and hand signals.
Come and meet some new scaly friends and their keeper at a snake presentation. The audience is encouraged to ask lots of questions and feel the smooth scales of the reptiles. The pythons have been trained since they were hatchlings at Lone Pine and are friendly and safe for visitors to hold. There are a few different pythons that can be held, including: olive python, black-headed python, jungle carpet python and a diamond python.
Lone Pine has had many guest celebrities visit, and there is a star-studded guest book on their website.
