Breathtaking Croatian Cities

Written by

With multiple award winning hotels and over 500 miles of Adriatic coastline, who doesn’t want to go to Croatia?  This historic country in Eastern Europe is now commanding the attention it deserves, and travelers are taking notice.  The country boasts a unique location along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and including over one thousand islands, and borders five other Eastern European countries - assets which when combined, offer a multitude of must-see destinations and must-do adventures. Recently, twitter users ranked Croatia among the most beautiful countries in the world.

Referring to tourism in 2011, Andreja Cvitkovic, director USA & Canada of the Croatian National Tourist Office in NY said, “Croatia reported increases beyond expectations in 2011. There were 11.5 million tourist arrivals recorded, an eight percent increase over 2010 results. North American and Canadian markets have had a stable increase over the past couple of years. Last year we welcomed 200,000 Americans and Canadians to Croatia, which was a 13 percent increase over the previous year.”

And it is no wonder. Once your clients have decided to go to Croatia, the next dilemma is deciding which of the unique cities and destinations they want to visit. Travel to Croatia is affordable, and offers a beautiful landscape, friendly citizens, and a wealth of vacation opportunities of every type. There are many destinations additional to those mentioned here. Foodies should consider a trip to Istria, known for its famous truffles. It is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea, so also offers a variety of beach vacations.

Located on the coast of the city of Zadar is a sea organ built into marble steps. Pipes below these steps fill with Adriatic Sea water, resulting in harmonic musical sounds. Built by the architect Nikola Basic, the site was opened in 2005.  From Zadar, clients can take boat rides to the many Croatian islands.

The city of Split offers the largest coastline of any city in Croatia.  A must-see destination here is Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage monument. It was built by a Roman Emperor in anticipation of his retirement at the turn of the 400th century AD.

Zagreb, the county’s capital, is also its largest city. It is known as the cultural center of Croatia, featuring a number of museums, the Croatian National Theatre, cobblestone streets and beautiful parks. The outdoor Dolac Market offers fresh foods and other delicacies to the city’s one million inhabitants, and also to its

Near Dubrovnik, Mljet, the county’s southern most island, offers reefs for scuba and snorkeling as well as opportunities for hiking and enjoying all nature has to offer. Its waters are crystal clear, and offer great visibility.

The Plitvice Lakes found in Plitvice National Park in the Lika region of Croatia are surrounded by mountains and green forests. The waterfalls and lake waters take on different colored hues of blue and green from the sunlight, truly a sight to behold.
