September

September

Though the holiday season once meant big family get-togethers, lots of cooking and possibly shoveling snow, nowadays many families, couples and singles choose to spend their holidays at sea or on one of Europe’s great rivers.

Quebec's Famous Winter Carnival

Written by
The word “Carnival” brings to mind festive floats, elaborate costumes and raucous celebrating. It is celebrated in many places such as Rio de Janiero, and of course Mardi Gras in New Orleans, but, for cold climate lovers there is a major annual celebration in Canada at the Quebec Winter Festival. It is the largest winter festival in the world, and attendance over the seventeen days numbers near one million. Carnival is usually celebrated just before the week of Lent, and for 2013, the celebration in Quebec kicks off on February 1st, and runs through February 17th.

Jump Into Ireland

Written by
Ireland is all about experiences. Sure, your clients will want to see the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry and Giant’s Causeway, but even these dramatic landscapes are as much about the experience as they are about seeing the scenery. What would Dublin be without a pint in a pub and a bowl of Irish stew? It would be like going to Blarney Castle and not kissing the stone. Whether clients are foodies, golfers, birders, fascinated by the Titanic or revisiting their Irish roots, you can help them plan an itinerary filled with memory-rich experiences.

Aboard Antwerp’s New Red Star Line Museum

Written by
Antwerp residents call their hometown “’t stadt,” or simply, “the city.” Never mind that Brussels, Belgium’s capital and largest city, is only 35 minutes south by train. Or that Ghent, itself a major cultural center, lies 45 minutes southwest. Never mind that London and Paris are less than two hours west by high-speed rail. Antwerpers see their city as the center of the universe - and with good reason.

Antwerp Explorations

Written by
With world-class arts and attractions, and an energetic multicultural population, Antwerp feels as dynamic as New York City. Belgium’s second-largest city attracts 800,000 visitors annually, including 100,000 cruise passengers, yet it’s surprisingly compact. Visitors can cross the center city on foot in a half-hour and traverse the city’s length in an hour. There’s a network of buses and trams, and red bikes can be rented hourly at convenient outdoor stations. As befits a great port city, sightseeing boats like Flandria offer tours along the River Scheldt and in the port, which stretches as far north as the Netherlands.

Begin the New Age in the Mayan World- 2012

Written by
As soon as we exit the jeep and enter the jungle, howler monkeys squawk high in the palms. Weaver birds zip by with grass in their mouths. Massive banyans choke and engulf other trees with their strangling vines. Humongous ferns spring from the jungle floor. And in the distance, the stone pyramids of Caracol in Belize rise out of the greenery as if they too grew there. I am in the Mayan world. Not much has changed over the last 1,600 years except the passing of time, and we are here to celebrate that. The year 2012 marks the end…

Jamaica is Gold

Written by
If you’ve ever sampled chicken from a roadside vendor in Jamaica who had a barrel propped up and cut open, you’ve enjoyed Jamaican drum pan chicken. Served in aluminum foil without utensils, the smoky flavor distinguishes pan from the more well-known and spicier style of jerk grilling. Saluting the island’s pan chicken chefs, Caribbean Broilers Pan Chicken Festival is for connoisseurs of pan and those who cook it. Staged on Ocean Boulevard in Kingston, the tasty event includes a series of regional competitions that lead up to the grand finale on Sunday, November 18, one of a wide array of…

Surprising Southern India

Written by
The vast subcontinent of India is more than 2,000 miles long, from the Himalayan highlands in the north of the country to its southernmost cape. Fully 20% of this vertical distance is accounted for by the state of Tamil Nadu -- which, together with the neighboring state of Kerala, make up the fascinating world of Southern India.

Today's Calling Cards

Written by
I am fascinated with history, and have a particular fondness for ephemera. I love to ponder how living life in a time gone by compares to the life we are living today, and old paper items offer a unique glimpse into the past.
