More For My Bucket List

Written by  Katie Hultgren

While reading the stories in this issue of JAX FAX, I added a few more destinations to my “Travel Bucket List.” These are the journeys for someday - places I’d really like to see at some point in the future. As for today, I am too busy with work, the kids, the house and those countless other reasons we put off the things we really desire. As you might imagine, being the editor of JAX FAX and reading so many fantastic articles every month, my travel bucket list grows longer with each issue.

In the Zagreb, Croatia article within this issue, I read about the Museum of Broken Relationships. Researching and learning about this museum was fascinating. What an oddly intriguing concept for a museum. Previewing the exhibited items and the stories from these broken relationships evoked emotion and sparked my imagination. I want to go and see the remnants of love on display for myself. And, while in Zagreb - ride the funicular, and visit all the other places that the Upper and Lower Towns have to offer.

Another article that peaked my interest was our Germany cover feature. It brought to mind an image of the red-covered hardbound edition of the Grimm’s Fairy Tales book from my childhood. Traveling to Germany to traverse the same paths as the Brothers Grimm just got jotted on my ever-growing must-do list. Other places on my list, ideas from previous issues of JAX FAX, include the The Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland, an African Safari, and an Antarctic cruise to see the northern lights - and my list goes on and on.

Thanks to the 2007 movie The Bucket List, which starred Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, we now have a common term for the things we want to do at some point in our lives - or less sensitively, before we “kick the bucket.” There is a website where you can create and share your personal bucket list agenda at www.bucketlist.org. I viewed the entries that were tagged “Travel” and there were hundreds of posts - from just one day! A few of the more interesting examples of travel-to-dos on the list at the time of my visit to the site were: Drink Vodka in Russia, Ride a Camel in Morocco, and Drive on the Autobahn. Spending time on that website will surely give you more great ideas to add to your own list.

I see this as a great opportunity for travel agents. So many people wanting to go so many places, and you have the knowledge and expertise to help them check those line items off of their bucket lists. Thinking in terms of marketing strategies, you could include this theme in your communications with your clients. Ask clients to create and share their bucket lists, and tell them how you can help them to achieve their dreams. We’d love to know what destinations and adventures you and your clients have on your travel bucket lists. Let us know by posting them on our Facebook page, or by sending me a note at  This email address is being protected from spambots.
