Season of giving

Written by  Katie Hultgren

When you read JAX FAX, hopefully, you are being transported by words to the destinations featured in each article. You are probably not thinking about where our offices are located. Our headquarters are located in Milford, Connecticut and we have many writers in the tri-state area - which was recently affected by Hurricane Sandy, and one week later, by a Nor?easter which brought an unexpected 10 inches of snow to the region.

JAX FAX was extremely fortunate, our building did not suffer any damage, nor did we even lose electricity. We were out of the office for a day, and resumed normal operations within 24-hours of the storm. That was not the case for so many people, and for so many businesses. In fact, many people in our area are still struggling with no electricity or heat, and the most unfortunate have lost everything, including their homes and all of their possessions. You have almost certainly seen images of the devastation in the affected East Coast states and other regions on the news. It is now a few weeks post-storm. There has already been much restoration, but Hurricane Sandy created damage that will have long-term effect.

What has truly impressed me lately is the outpouring of support and assistance for the people who have been impacted by these storms. I am truly moved by the number of people I know who are personally volunteering to help with clean up efforts. Today, I heard a news report that some of our local food pantries are seeing the largest number of donations in history. In my town, the high school is collecting donations of gift cards for students at nearby high schools in towns that were severely impacted. People who once donated to these types of efforts now find themselves being the recipients of the goodwill of others. It is so nice to see that sometimes the worst circumstances can bring out the best qualities in people.

We are now into the holiday season, which is the time for giving. It is a time for being thankful for what we have, and for sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves. Sadly, there are many people in need - not only those affected by the storm, but everyday people who are affected by the economy, or other circumstances beyond their control. There is so much we can and should do to help. I urge you to consider making a donation to a cause of your choice, taking a bag of food to your local food pantry, or just sharing your time with someone who might enjoy your company. There are great websites that offer ideas for charitable works, such as becoming a toy or food collection site, or attending a blood drive with co-workers. What may seem like a small effort could mean the world to someone in need. It makes you feel good, too.

We wish you all the best for the upcoming holiday season, and a very Happy New Year.
