Beginning this month, and running through the same time next year, Berlin will celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall, which occurred 25 years ago. In June, it will be the 70th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied troops landed in Normandy, France. Also in France, it is the 125th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower.
The Panama Canal is celebrating its 100th anniversary in August of 2014. The canal took over five years to build and is considered an engineering marvel. Next year will also mark the 20th anniversary of the Channel Tunnel, also known as the Chunnel, which connects England and France. Finnair will be celebrating its 90th anniversary. Delta Airlines, which started as a crop dusting organization, is also going to be 90 in 2014.
Fifty years ago, the Beatles took the US by storm on their first tour to the country, performing on the Ed Sullivan Show. And if you can wait until 2015, plan to be in Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee for Elvis’ 80th birthday celebration.
